Usually depicted as human above the waist and snake below the waist, Nagas can also change shape to appear fully human or snake. Nagas and Nagis are known for their strength, supernatural wisdom, and good looks.

When Nagis take human form, they can marry mortal men, and some Indian and Cambodian dynasties claim descent from them.

Nagas are broadly divided into two classes: those that live on land (thalaja) and those that live on water (jalaja). The Jalaja-nāgā live in rivers as well as in the sea, while the Thalaja-nāgā are regarded as living beneath the surface of the earth.

Since Nagas have an affinity with water, the entrances to their underground palaces are often said to be hidden at the bottom of wells, deep lakes and rivers

Several Nāga dwellings are mentioned in the books:

  • Mañjerika-bhavana under Sineru,
  • Daddara-bhavana at the foot of Mount Daddara in the Himālaya,
  • the Dhatarattha-nāgā under the river Yamunā,
  • the Nābhāsā Nāgā in Lake Nabhasa,
  • and also the Nāgas of Vesāli, Tacchaka, and Payāga (D.ii.258).

The name of the Indian city Nagpur is derived from Nagapura, the legendary city of Nagas.
